Dozens Of Political Prisoners Have Been Released In Venezuela

Venezuelan authorities released dozens of political prisoners a few days after Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodríguez met with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York, according to the BBC.
Among those released was Wilder Vázquez, who in 2018 was sentenced to five years in prison in a case involving an alleged plot against dictator Nicolás Maduro. Also released were Miguel Castillo Sedeno, whom the human rights organization “Foro Penal” had identified as having been unlawfully detained since 2019, and Frank Cabañas, who had spent nine years behind bars.
The deputy director of “Foro Penal,” Gonzalo Jimiob, announced the release of a “significant number” of political prisoners from several prisons.
The releases came amid new demands from the opposition to hold free elections in the country. Rodríguez had previously stated at the UN General Assembly that “there will be elections in Venezuela,” but did not specify a date for the vote.
The authorities had previously released hundreds of prisoners as part of a reconciliation program. In April, Rodríguez stated that this process was nearing completion. “Foro Penal” claimed that by that time, less than half of the political prisoners had been released.
The Venezuelan authorities did not explain the latest releases or indicate whether they were related to the negotiations between Rodríguez and Trump.
Meanwhile, domestic debates over the upcoming elections are intensifying. The opposition is demanding clear timelines, while the government speaks of a process of democratic transformation without specifying a date for the vote.
