"Nothing Works": A Donetsk Resident Shows What The Russian Federation Has Done To The City

A resident of occupied Donetsk showed what daily life is like in the city after 12 years of Russian occupation. Her apartment has neither water nor electricity, and the expensive appliances she bought after renovating the place are essentially sitting idle, according to dialog.ua.

The woman recorded a video on her cell phone and walked through the apartment, showing the consequences of the utility crisis. She plugged things into outlets and demonstrated that the lights wouldn’t come on. She also showed the kitchen, where, instead of properly functioning appliances, she has to use a plastic basin.

She explains sarcastically that instead of all these expenses, they could have just bought a plastic basin right away. In the kitchen stands a basin with traces of rusty, dirty water visible at the bottom: “Nothing works! Why waste money on all this?”

Social media users note that until 2014, Donetsk was one of the most developed and wealthy cities in Ukraine. It was a major industrial, cultural, and business center with modern infrastructure, universities, a stadium, an airport, restaurants, shopping centers, and a normal urban lifestyle.

After Russia’s intervention, the city fell into a state of decline.

Donetsk continues to face a critical water supply situation, which has worsened due to the shutdown of the main Seversky Donets Canal -Donbass canal, severe wear and tear on utility networks (up to 75%), and regular power outages at pumping stations. The Don–Donbas water pipeline, once built, only partially meets the city’s needs, and the water supplied is often industrial-grade and requires extensive filtration.
