Portnikov Identified The Kremlin's Main Goal

For the Kremlin, Ukraine can serve only as a springboard for further expansion.

Putin does not need Ukraine, Crimea, or the Donbas separately, since his goal is not to seize new territories but to restore his empire to its former borders, explained Vitaly Portnikov. For Russia, any captured territory is a springboard that will be used to advance further.

The political analyst discussed what Putin really wants on the YouTube channel “And Graham Blasted”.

“For Putin, what matters are his goals, which change depending on the situation. It seems to me that the very people who watch the Kremlin are the ones who imagine that the Kremlin has any truly important goals other than a return to imperial proportions and the preservation of power. Everything else is merely supporting material. Today it might be Crimea; tomorrow it could be the Baltic states (rescuing the Russian-speaking population). That, too, is never sincere, as you understand,” Portnikov shed light on the Kremlin leader’s main goal.

“If it’s possible to use these Russian-speakers in the Baltic states as a tool to exert pressure on the Baltic states (Russia isn’t actually interested in the Russian-speakers themselves), then they can be used. There is no real target to defend, no real target to attack. There is only a tool. By the way, Ukraine, too, may turn out to be a tool—rather than a sacred goal—for, say, an attack on Europe, a new springboard. It’s simply a series of springboards. “If you represent an expansionist state, then any new territory you capture becomes a springboard for expansion,” the columnist emphasized.
