"Metro" Will Connect Italy, Germany, And Austria

Commercial train service is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027.

Test runs of new high-speed trains that will connect Italy, Germany, and Austria have begun on European railways, according to Independent. The project is already being called the “European subway.”

The Italian state-owned railway group Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) has begun testing on the Berlin–Munich and Salzburg–Vienna routes in partnership with Germany’s Deutsche Bahn and Austria’s ÖBB.

The service between Germany and Austria will be operated by Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed trains, designed to run on rail networks across the entire continent.

Commercial service is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. Initially, four trains will operate on the existing Milan–Munich and Rome–Munich routes.

The trip between Milan and Munich will take about six and a half hours, with stops in Brescia, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, and Innsbruck. The journey between Rome and Munich is expected to take eight and a half hours, with stops in Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, and Innsbruck.

Starting in December 2028, ten additional flights are planned to connect routes via Milan, Rome, and Munich with Naples and Berlin. The new service will also meet demand for other European destinations, particularly Frankfurt and Kraków.

“We are moving toward creating a European high-speed metro that will provide passengers with a service capable of connecting regions, people, and economies,” noted FS Group CEO Gianpiero Strishuljo.

In August, it was reported that Virgin Trains, owned by British billionaire Richard Branson, had secured track access for new routes between London and Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam in 2030. Thus, in a few years, it will be able to compete with the monopoly operator Eurostar in the rail transport market between the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

Earlier, it was reported that a new direct rail service from Prague to Copenhagen via Berlin and Hamburg has restored a convenient way to travel between some of Europe’s most popular cities without flying.
