Sam Altman: Everyone Should Have Their Own Humanoid Robot

The CEO of OpenAI has unveiled ambitious plans.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is developing its own humanoid robot. The company’s CEO Sam Altman confirmed plans to create an android and stated that in the future, virtually everyone will have one, according to The Forbes.
Altman explains the choice of a human-like form quite simply: the modern world was originally designed for humans. Doors, computers, kitchen appliances, tools, and other equipment are designed for the human body, so a robot with a similar body will find it easier to use them.
At the same time, Altman considers the main challenge to be not the creation of the robot itself, but the development of its “brain”. The machine will need to learn to perceive the world around it, reason, and perform tasks in a real-world environment.
OpenAI is already actively recruiting specialists in the field of robotics. Specifically, the company is looking for engineers to work on actuators and other key components of future robots. This suggests plans on a larger scale than simply creating an AI model for an existing robot.
As the source notes, OpenAI was once involved in robot development but shut down the project by 2021 because it could not obtain enough data to train the robots effectively. Having its own network of robots would allow the company to continuously collect such information and use it to further train its models.
It is not yet known exactly when OpenAI’s first robot will be released. The company has not disclosed the release date, the robot’s specifications, or its production target, but Altman’s statements indicate that robotics is becoming one of OpenAI’s new key areas of focus.
According to Forbes, more than 19,000 humanoid robots were shipped worldwide in the first half of 2026—a 272% increase from the previous year. Chinese manufacturers accounted for more than 97% of these shipments.
