In Minsk, A Witness To A Traffic Accident Was Convicted On Two Counts

She lied three times about the driver and blabbed the details in the work chat.

An 18-year-old resident of Smolevichi testified as a witness in a traffic accident case, but after giving several false statements, she herself became the defendant. The court fined her 1,800 rubles under two articles of the Criminal Code, the state agency reported “Minsk-Novosti” by the Central District Prosecutor’s Office.

The accident occurred in March 2025 at the intersection of Masherov and Pobediteley Avenues in Minsk. A Mercedes-Benz 280 collided with a bus after the driver of the car lost control.

Before traffic police arrived, two passengers in the Mercedes left the scene of the accident. According to an expert’s report, one of them sustained serious bodily injury.

The driver involved in the accident asked the young woman traveling with him to say that his live-in partner had been behind the wheel, and she agreed. During questioning, she was warned three times—and made to sign a statement acknowledging her criminal liability for knowingly giving false testimony—yet she continued to repeat this version of events.

“In addition, the defendant signed a non-disclosure agreement regarding the preliminary investigation, a violation of which also carries criminal liability. Despite this, she discussed the incident with a friend and in her work chat group,” police said.

As a result, a criminal case was opened against her under two charges: knowingly giving false testimony and disclosing information from the preliminary investigation.

In court, the Smolevich resident fully admitted her guilt and expressed remorse. She had no prior criminal record, has a high school education, and works as a cook and barista at a private company.

The court found her guilty under Part 1 of Article 401 of the Criminal Code and Article 407 of the Criminal Code and imposed a fine of 40 base units (1,800 rubles).
