Armed men with assault rifles, tasked with shooting down drones attacking Moscow, appeared for the first time on the roof of Lenin’s Mausoleum. In a video published by “VChK-OGPU” on Friday, October 23, a “drone hunter” stands on the mausoleum, from which general secretaries used to watch parades and marching columns during the Soviet era, reports The Moscow Times.
Also, according to the video, armed drone-hunters appeared on the Kremlin towers, and armored vehicles belonging to mobile fire teams equipped with anti-aircraft machine guns were deployed at the entrances to the Kremlin. Muscovites have repeatedly spotted such equipment in the center of the capital during major Ukrainian drone raids, as well as during preparations for the May 9 celebrations.
On October 23, the Moscow region was hit by a massive wave of Ukrainian drones. The attack paralyzed air traffic at the airports of the Moscow aviation hub. The evacuation was carried out in the “IQ-Quarter” high-rise in “Moscow City,” where the offices of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, the Ministry of Economic Development, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Rosstandart, and other agencies are located.
Previously, to defend against Ukrainian drones—which have attacked Russian oil refineries more than a hundred times this year, as well as struck e-commerce warehouses, data centers, and defense manufacturing facilities—several additional air defense rings were established in and around Moscow. Aerial platforms manned by military personnel to shoot down drones appeared near “Moscow City,” and “Pantsir” air defense systems were deployed on the roofs of the Rosneft office building and the upscale “Dom v Sokolnikakh” residential complex.
According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, more than 100 air defense systems have been deployed around Moscow since 2023. In 2025, an additional 43 towers equipped with “Pantsir-S1” systems were installed near the capital. Potential sites for deploying S-400 air defense systems were spotted in Moskvoretsky Park in the Kuntsevo district, near the “Medik” stadium on Pavlova Street, and not far from the Moscow State University Innovation Science and Technology Center, which is overseen by the “Innopraktika” Foundation run by the Russian president’s youngest daughter Katerina Tikhonova. In addition, air defense systems are being deployed to Putin’s residence in Valdai in the Novgorod Region, where 27 towers had been erected by March 2026 to house “Pantsir” systems.
