The U.S. will step up the pressure.
The U.S. is preparing for a protracted standoff with Iran, even despite rising fuel prices and the economic consequences of the conflict. Washington hopes to increase pressure on Tehran, but a quick diplomatic breakthrough is not expected. This will come at a high cost to consumers and businesses, writes Financial Times (translation by Charter97.org).
U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated that Washington is prepared to maintain the blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely. The administration of President Donald Trump is relying on economic pressure, hoping to force Tehran to make concessions, including on its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, the conflict is already affecting global energy markets. Disruptions in fuel supplies and rising prices are increasing pressure on the U.S. administration, especially ahead of the midterm congressional elections.
The conflict may drag on, despite the consequences for fuel prices. For Washington, this means it must simultaneously maintain pressure on Iran and take into account the growing costs for American consumers.
So far, the White House has shown no willingness to abandon its chosen strategy. However, the longer the standoff drags on, the more difficult it will be to contain its economic consequences.
