They are the presidents or prime ministers of European countries.

Europe is currently selecting potential negotiators to represent it in talks with Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, and at this point, the discussion centers on five candidates who are presidents or prime ministers of European countries.

This information was reported by the British publication The Telegraph.

Diplomatic sources told the publication that potential candidates for this role have already been approached.

Specifically, those being considered for the role include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Czech President Petr Pavel, as well as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre.

“Europe has realized that, first, there must be a consensus on the need to negotiate with the Russians. Second, there must be a consensus on exactly what that position should be,” noted a source familiar with the discussions.

In recent weeks, during which the U.S. president has been accused of pressuring Kyiv to make concessions, calls for Europe to form its own negotiating team have intensified. Previous attempts to agree on a single leader who could secure the support of capitals across the continent have failed.

A source familiar with the discussions noted that a group of leaders will likely be selected, which would avoid competition among countries for this role and the risk of a veto against individual candidates.

Finnish leader Alexander Stubb has become a constant figure in European efforts to support Ukraine during the negotiations. He has strong ties to Trump and was recently in Oslo during talks between the Ukrainian president and U.S. representatives.

There is also discussion that Czech President Petr Pavel is a suitable candidate for this role due to his past as a NATO commander with experience in military negotiations with the Russians.

Yesterday, Politico reported that the search for a European representative has become particularly urgent this week after U.S. President’s Special Envoy Steve Whitcoff visited Russia.

During talks in Oslo this week, Finnish President Stubb stated that the negotiation process was back on track.

After talks with Vladimir Putin in Russia and before returning to the U.S., Whitcoff met with Norwegian Prime Minister Støre.
