The Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine detained a resident of the Donetsk region who sided with the Russian army in 2022 and has now attempted to return to Ukraine via Belarus. This was reported by the SBU.
Before the start of the full-scale war, the detainee worked as a nurse at the Donetsk Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital. In late February 2022, she voluntarily enlisted in the 91st Separate Rifle Regiment of the 1st Army Corps of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation, was promoted to sergeant, and served until August 2024.
After being discharged from the army, the woman wanted to leave the occupied territory for an EU country. To do so, she needed a Ukrainian passport, which had to be reissued. To enter Ukraine, she chose a route through Belarus and crossed the border at the “Domanovo” checkpoint.
She was detained at a hotel in Kovel. During a search, authorities found a Russian passport, Russian military ID cards, a Russian veteran’s ID, and Russian rubles in her possession.
The woman was charged with treason under martial law.
