Alyaksandr Lukashenka has recently got acquainted with harvesting process in the Minsk region. An embarrassing trifle slipped in the image of “defender of the nation” and “ploughboy, noticed by Belarusian bloggers. A 600-dollar Hermes belt, easily recognised by a belt buckle, hit the eye.
Dear Charter 97,
ReplyIt is good for a president to look presidential for he or she is firstly the first seen impression of ones country outside the country.
Why then is the president of Belarus photographed in fancy clothes in a field of wheat?
I believe he was simply traveling along a road which passed through fields of wheat while on his way to a meeting. Someone suggested they stop for photos, which they did. End of story, not quite.
On the opposite side of the road walked a hunched back frail appearing woman in her late sixties. She stoped and watched as the group of men frolicked in the wheat. She watched as they drove off and she was not noticed by any in the group. In her mind she thought for a few minutes, must be people from a foreign land. Fancy clothes, fancy cars, fancy watches, I wonder if I really saw what I thought I saw? Enough of this, it is near three and I must return home before dark, only six kilometers to go. I will be happy when I get this load of wood off my back. Is this 21st century rural Belarus or a reflection of the 1920s?
