Union of Poles of Belarus goes strong

The main Council of the disgraced Union of Poles in Belarus hasn’t agreed to the offer of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on forming a working group for talks with pro-Lukashenka part of the organization headed by Yuzaf Luchnik.

It happened despite of the personal presence of Polish Ambassador to Poland Henryk Litvin, who called the reports of Rzeczpospolita a speculation, and called upon the Council to create a group for talks with Luchnik. However, the decision to have talks was not adopted. At the same time readiness for talks with the regime, but not with its “marionettes” was declared.

On Saturday the situation with the UPB was commented by Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk. He refuted reports about behind-the-scene agreements between the administrations of Poland and Belarus on normalization of relations in exchange for termination of the Belarusian democratic opposition’s support.

Belarusian Ambassador to Poland Paval Latushka returns to Belarus. The mission is over. The Ambassador wanted to make a “demobee’s chord”: to solve the problem of the split UPB. The favourable conditions (warming of the relations with the West) and support of the pro-regime Polish Agricultural party have contributed to his successful lobbying the proposal in Polish Foreign Ministry. But as soon as it was mentioned in the press, all participants of the seemingly ready agreement started to explain themselves loudly and say that they had been misunderstood.
