New German Ambassador: Relations with Belarus to depend on elections results

The EU countries are to watch closely the presidential elections in Belarus.
The EU is to build its further relations with the country depending on the election campaign conduct, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Christof Weil told reporters on Wednesday in Minsk, Interfax reports.
“We hope that the election will be held in a proper way. The results of the election will determine the relations between Belarus and the EU. Both my country and the EU are ready to deepen cooperation with Belarus,” Weil said.
He noted that both Berlin and Brussels many times stated that they are ready to deepen the bilateral relations with Belarus. “These are certain expectations, which are aimed at our further development of relations to mutual interest. However we see Europe as a continent imbued with the spirit of partnership, and this spirit involves common values,” Weil said.
“I think we need trust relations, this concerns economy and policy. We must be able to tell each other the truth, in order to truly develop relations,” Weil underlined.
He expressed the hope that Belarusian Investment Forum would be held in Frankfurt am Main successfully. However the Ambassador attracted attention to the fact that German investors should have objective and comprehensive information about legal and framework conditions of business dealing in Belarus. It is necessary for investors to encourage their shareholders to invest money to the country’s economy.
“German economy and industry also should have an impression that investments I Belarusian economy would afford good profit to them. But investors need stable framework conditions of work,” the diplomat added.
Weil has also underlined that representative of German business circles are expecting from Belarus evaluation of prospects of the Customs union development. This evaluation could be offered by the Belarusian side during the forum. So far, Mr Weil stated, the German business has taken a wait-and-see approach towards the Customs union.
