The European Union must consider the issue of imposing “well-targeted economic sanctions” against Belarus because of the recent “horrible events” there.
Such a statement has been made by Urmas Paet, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, in Riga after the talks with his Latvian counterpart, Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis, Radio Svaboda informs with a reference to DPA news agency (Germany).
Mr Paet said that sanctions could be applied “against persons close to the regime”, including companies and enterprises that help Alyaksandr Lukashenka to stay in power. “The EU should analyze such a possibility and be ready for well-targeted sanctions,” Paet said.
Estonia was one of the most active critics of Lukashenka, assessments of this country had been much harsher than assessments of the neighbouring Lithuania and Latvia.
