Boris Nemtsov: Lukashenka going to end up like Ceausescu

It has been 101 days since the Belarusian presidential elections were held.

Repressions against the democratic opposition have still been continuing since December 19, 2010.

It could hardly be possible if Lukashenka had not been supported by the Kremlin, Russian politician Boris Nemtsov thinks.

- It is terror in the country. Innocent people are in jail. They are concerned, honest, adhering to their principles. They are an honour of Belarus. My friend Anatol Lyabedzka is among them. I think it is a real nightmare, absolute outrage and arbitrary rule. These are convulsions of Lukashenka’s wretched regime, Boris Nemtsov said in an interview to the UCP website.

- Lukashenka lost the elections, - the Russian politician is convinced. - According to different exit-polls, he got 42% of the votes. He threw all political opponents in jail sp that nobody could dispute and protest over this matter. He will definitely ends up like Ceausescu, or, if he is lucky, like Mubarak. Sooner or later, cruds pay for their actions. Lukashenka is not an exception.

- In your view, why is the West’s policy of sanctions against Belarus still unsuccessful?

- It is because 90 per cent of Belarusian economy depends on Russia. Generally speaking, only principal policy of the Kremlin can give results. But Lukashenka has his mental brothers in the Kremlin. They hate him, but they are the same as he. Lukashenka’s regime survives only due to subsidies from Russia. Putin, his congenial soul and mentally close person, helped Lukashenka when the Belarusian economy was a bankrupt. If it had not been for Putin’s aid, the Belarusian ruble would have collapsed and people would finally have understood who had been ruling them. They would have sent Lukashenka to a political cemetery. But they belong to the same class, that’s why Putin helps Lukashenka. This means that there is no difference between Lukashenka and Putin.

I’d like to wish the soonest release for all Belarusian political prisoners, first of all for Anatol Lyabedzka.
