King Haakon VIII Of Norway Took The Oath Of Office

In Norway, on September 1 at 1:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. in Minsk), King Haakon VIII took an oath of allegiance to the country’s Constitution before the Norwegian Parliament—the Storting.

Haakon automatically became King of Norway following the death of his father, King Harald V. Before the members of Parliament, he swore an oath to the people of the country that he would reign in accordance with the laws of Norway as established by the Constitution. As representatives of the Storting noted, this procedure is one of the most important constitutional acts accompanying a change of monarch.

During the ceremony, the Speaker of Parliament announced to those gathered the death of King Harald V and the succession to the throne by the new monarch. Afterward, Haakon VIII took an oath of allegiance to the Constitution before the Storting and addressed those present with a brief speech.
