Raman Yakauleuski: Lukashenka will fly to Baku for oil and money

Aliyev issues Lukashenka short-term loans in critical moments.

Political observer Raman Yakauleuski spoke to charter97.org about a possible meeting between the Belarusian dictator and president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

“Information about greetings to Aliyev on occasion of Republic Day that contains a few words about a possible meeting in Azerbaijan came together with another interesting message. A day before, setting new tasks to his officials, Lukashenka mentioned the need to step up bilateral cooperation with Venezuela. It was the task for Siamashka,” the political observer noted.

He stressed that it was Azerbaijan that played an important role in delivering Venezuelan oil to Belarus.

“I mean the so called swap schemes. We also know that Aliyev has always given short-term loans in critical moments. Some 300 million dollars were mentioned. Lukashenka is interested in oil supplies, but he is even more interested in loans and investments that Azerbaijan can give. They have issues to discuss,” Raman Yakauleuski said.

The political observer noted both countries were members of the Eastern Membership project.

“Out of six countries, these two do not have an aim to sign an Association Agreement with the EU. Unlike Minsk, Baku is rich and financially reliable mainly due to the country's oil resources that allow Aliyev to soften criticism of the West,” Raman Yakauleuski is confident.
