26th Anniversary Of Belarus's Independence Celebrated In New York

The theme of the threat of the West-2017 exercises was taken up at the event.

On August 27, the ion of the 26th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of Belarus was celebrated in the Cathedral of Kirill of Turov in New York. Zianon Pazniak made a speech-reminiscence about the events of August 1991. He also raised the topic of the threat to Belarusian independence as a result of Russian military exercises, Radio Racyja reports.

At the same time the anniversary of independence was celebrated by the Belarusians of Canada in Toronto.

They also listened to Zianon Poznyak's speech via Skype. Further, the celebration continued with literary readings featuring Siarhei Kudzelich, Aliaksandr Sachneu, Alena Kryvetskaya, Sviatlana Kazachok and Aliaksandr Dybun.

They cited the patriotic words of Tadevush Kastsiushka, Kastus Kalinouski, the poems of Yanka Kupala and Larysa Heniyush - those who for centuries anticipated the day when Belarus found its own statehood. Halina Pazniak performed Yanka Kupala’s poems. Another reason for joy became the presentation of the book by the patriarch of the Belarusian emigration Vitaut Kipel "Belarusians in the United States." This is the second, enlarged edition of the monograph, which represents a detailed history of the Belarusian presence in the United States, from the 18th century to the present day.

On Saturday, August 26, Belarusians from Philadelphia held a rally in celebration of Belarus's independence.
