Ukraine Will Receive New British Missiles To Strike Russia

London is developing a long-range weapon without American components.

The United Kingdom is developing new, low-cost, long-range ground-based missiles for Ukraine, the production of which will not depend on the United States. The project is known as “Brakestop.”

According to the Financial Times, the British government has unveiled three prototypes of such missiles. They were developed by MBDA UK, MGI Engineering, and Rotron Aerospace. The UK Ministry of Defense reported that all three systems successfully passed tests this spring. Following additional tests this year—both in the UK and Ukraine—one or more missiles will be delivered to Ukraine. The plan is to put the missile into service by the end of 2026.

The decision to develop and manufacture the missiles without U.S. involvement—and without any American components—was made intentionally. Thus, the U.S. will have no say in matters regarding the export and use of the missiles; these decisions will rest solely with the UK government.

It is reported that development of the missiles began in November 2024 after the U.S. blocked the supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine, such as the American ATACMS and the British Storm Shadow. The U.S. also blocked the launch of missiles deep into Russian territory due to fears of escalation. The U.S. had the authority to do so because the Storm Shadow uses American components, specifically guidance systems. It also relies on U.S. mapping data.

Bloomberg reporters, citing officials, added that this weapon will likely be less accurate than the Storm Shadow missiles, which are manufactured by the same company, MBDA. However, it will cost about half as much.

It is known that a Storm Shadow missile costs about $1 million. The missile has a range of 250 km and is a high-precision weapon thanks to its navigation via the Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrain-following capabilities.

The publication noted that the new missile will be capable of striking targets at a range of 500 kilometers. Although it will not be as powerful and will not be able, for example, to destroy a bunker. However, its 225-kg warhead is designed to inflict serious damage on the enemy. According to specifications, the cost of each missile should be approximately $530,000, excluding the warhead. All manufacturers note that they will be able to produce at least 40 missiles per month.
