Former Armenian Ambassador To Russia: Does Lukashenka Even Know What The Rome Statute Is?
STEPAN GRIGORYAN

The Belarusian dictator voices what he was told in the Kremlin.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, during his speech in the European Parliament, criticized the CSTO and said that Yerevan is ready for wider cooperation with Brussels.

What is the reason for such a turnaround in Yerevan? The Charter97.org website spoke about this with one of the leaders of the democratic movement in Armenia in the 1990s, a former deputy of the Supreme Council of the republic and former ambassador of Armenia to Russia Stepan Grigoryan.

– This is due to the fact that neither Russia nor the CSTO fulfils their obligations. Russia did not help Armenia during the 2020 war and after it. But most importantly, Russian peacekeeping forces did not help when the Armenians were expelled from their homeland. Neither Russia nor the CSTO have fulfilled their obligations, so the Armenian authorities are now cooperating more closely with the European Union and the United States.

Russia betrayed the Armenians by taking the side of Azerbaijan and Turkey. In this situation, Armenia needs to find new allies, this process is currently underway, so there is nothing surprising here. Another thing that was surprising to me was that Pashinyan said this in a very soft form, that the CSTO did not help, that the peacekeepers did not fulfil their obligations. Now there is a clearer orientation of Armenia towards the West.

– Russian propagandists had a real hysteria about this. Pashinyan is already being called the “new Zelensky.” How will relations between Yerevan and Moscow develop?

– I think they will only get worse. Relations between Armenia and Russia are already very tense. There has been tough diplomatic rhetoric and even insults against each other for the last three months.

What's the problem? The problem is that the Kremlin pursued its imperial policy trying to restore the empire and suppress the sovereign states. This is one reason why relations between Moscow and Yerevan will worsen, but there is also a second one. Many people pay attention to the fact that Azerbaijan does whatever it wants, and the Kremlin tolerates it, but in the case of Armenia, it does not. This is due to another factor, a human one exclusively.

The Kremlin is accustomed to the fact that the Armenians are their own, “slaves” who will do whatever they are told. In the case of Azerbaijan, they are accustomed to Baku saying “no”. Therefore, now, when Azerbaijan refuses to follow some things, for example, Azerbaijan recognises Crimea as Ukrainian and develops cooperation with Israel and Pakistan, they can do all this. In Armenia, the former corrupt authorities taught that all orders from Moscow must be followed. This is the second reason why the Kremlin is so sensitive to any independent steps by Yerevan.

– At the CIS summit in Kyrgyzstan, Lukashenka said: “Armenia does not always behave like a partner,” and reproached Yerevan for ratifying the Rome Statute. Why did Armenia annoy the Belarusian dictator so much?

– This is due to the fact that Lukashenka has already completely lost his independence. He is not an independent player.

Putin orders him what to say, and Lukashenka repeats it because this is not his topic of conversation. The Rome Statute, does he even understand what it is? Don't think.

He was simply given instructions from the Kremlin on what to say, and he repeated it. Lukashenka does not overlap with Armenia in any way, either in terms of interests or in any other aspects. This dictator fully obeys Putin, he has no room for maneuver.
