China could reach the level of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in five years.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would like to conclude an agreement with Russia and China to reduce nuclear arsenals. According to him, the U.S. has the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, Russia ranks second, and China could reach the U.S. level in five years.

“We should conclude a denuclearization agreement; that would be simply magnificent. We don’t need any of this; we don’t need to be able to blow up the whole world 300 times,” Trump said at a press conference following the G7 summit in France (the broadcast was streamed on Fox’s YouTube channel).

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III) had been in effect between the U.S. and Iran since 2011. It expired on February 5, and the parties did not renew the agreement. This was the last treaty limiting the nuclear arsenals of Russia and the U.S. The Russian side had stated its readiness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. after the treaty’s expiration. The U.S. administration proposed including China in a potential new treaty.
