MEP Anna Fotyga: EU Sanctions Against Lukashenka Must Be Tightened And Introduced Faster

It is time to take comprehensive measures against the regime in Belarus.

MEP from the ruling Law and Justice party in Poland, Anna Fotyga, believes that pressure on the Lukashenka regime in Belarus should be comprehensive and carried out from all possible sides, Polskie Radio reports.

“EU sanctions against Belarus should be tightened and introduced faster,” said Anna Fotyga. The politician believes that pressure should be complex and from all possible sides — not only for the complicity of the Lukashenka regime in the war against Ukraine unleashed by Russia, but also for the inhuman repressions against civil society in Belarus itself.

“For this terrible persecution, brutal repression. People like me, who also remember the hard times in People's Poland, can say that it is reminiscent of the periods of the 1950s, Stalin's repressions. It is terrible that something like this could happen in Europe in the 21st century. The solidarity of the international community is very important,” ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Anna Fotyga stressed.

The politician met in Brussels with the wife of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich and with the husband of European Belarus activist Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, mother of two minor children, who is subjected to inhuman treatment and, according to her husband, has lost 18 kilograms of weight in 2.5 years of imprisonment.

Anna Fotyga, commenting on the preliminary consent of the EU countries to new sanctions against the Lukashenka regime, assessed this as good news, stressing that this was the culmination of the efforts of Polish diplomacy.
