Ukrainian drones cut through the Kremlin's echeloned defenses.
On the night of July 24, explosions were heard in various parts of Moscow. It is reported that drones have attacked the Russian capital.
It is known about the destruction of buildings and smoke in the building near the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The secret facilities of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Russia are reported to have been attacked.
Is the attack on Moscow retaliation for the attack on Odessa? Charter97.org asked a military expert, head of the Ukrainian Center for Military and Legal Studies, Oleksandr Musiyenko.
- I think we should avoid the category of retaliation. These are military actions aimed at weakening the enemy's potential. In general, I would like to emphasize three important points.
First, Ukraine is striking directly at places where there may be a command center.
Second, in general, all this is happening in response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. We are simply defending ourselves. I emphasize that these are defensive actions on our part, we are not acting in the category of retaliation.
Thirdly, such strikes are carried out to make the Russian population psychologically aware that the war, which they thought was far away from them, taking place somewhere in the south of Zaporozhzhia or Donbass, is coming to them. This is a decisive moment.
Let the enemy understand that we are getting opportunities and we are starting to act not only reactively (defending ourselves, responding with air defense), but also by launching such attacks on Russian territory.
- What drones could attack Moscow?
- I think they were Ukrainian-made UAVs. We are now working on improvement of certain types. We now have quite serious programs that are finally being funded. The developers are working to ensure that these weapons are specifically Ukrainian and not those provided by partners.
We should not have disagreements with our Western friends about violating agreements by using Western weapons for strikes on Russian territory.
This work has been going on since last fall, when it was claimed that we urgently needed our drones, at least the Shahed type.
- What do such attacks prove about Russia's air defenses?
- That it is vulnerable. Nevertheless, we know that the Russian air defense does indeed shoot down some of the Ukrainian drones.
Of course, attacks on the territory of Russia or the occupied territories are launched with the expectation that some UAVs will be shot down. Nevertheless, we note that the Russian air defense is vulnerable in principle, despite the fact that they are deploying echeloned air defenses, EWS (electronic warfare systems).
I would like to emphasize that they are now highly vulnerable on Russian territory because Russia has moved many air defense systems to occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine. There are many of them there.
But our forces are bypassing the echeloned defense of Crimea. This is a special achievement of the AFU, because it is not an easy task to cross such a busy air defense lines.
