Azerbaijan Condemns Russia’s Pseudo-Elections On Ukrainian Territory

The Russian Foreign Ministry was indignant.

On September 9, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry made an official statement which said that Baku does not recognize the elections held by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine, precisely, in the self-proclaimed “DPR”, “LPR”, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Baku stated that they consider voting in these territories “illegal and illegitimate”, the elections held by Russia “having no legal force”, and the Russian-occupied territories of the “DPR”, “LPR”, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions themselves to be the “internationally recognized territory of Ukraine”.

This statement caused discontent in Russia. As stated by official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, Azerbaijan “has been told everything about this.”

“We cannot accept such assessments; these are unacceptable assessments, and they are not consistent with the allied level of relations between our countries. Therefore, a diplomatic demarche was carried out in front of the Azerbaijani side. We have expressed everything about this,” she said on September 13.
