The UN Human Rights Committee Found The Regime Guilty In The Cases Of 13 Citizens

And demands an answer from Belarus.

The UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) found the government of Belarus "guilty of violating the right" of 13 Belarusian citizens to "freedom of expression and peaceful assembly," the Viasna HRC reports.

The decision was made on July 17.

Human rights activists name only one of the 13 — an activist from Borysau (Minsk region) Aliaksandr Abramovich.

We are talking about violations in bringing to justice in Belarus between 2016 and 2020 for "participation or public calls for participation in unauthorized peaceful protests." Those who filed complaints were fined and arrested for a period of 5 to 10 days.

Following the consideration of the reports, the committee noted that it had repeatedly established that Belarus had violated the rights provided for in Articles 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The UNHRC ruled that the Belarusian state "must provide the complainants with effective remedies in the form of full compensation — reimbursement of the cost of fines paid, legal costs."

In addition, Belarus must take "all necessary measures" to prevent similar violations in the future. To this end, the UNHRC recommends revising the national legal framework so that the rights enshrined in Articles 19 and 21 of the Covenant can be fully realized.

At the same time, the Committee noted that it would like to receive information from Belarus within 180 days on the measures taken to implement the Committee's decision.

In 2023 and 2024, the UNHRC adopted several similar decisions.
