A multi-thousand-strong group of Russian conscripts may be surrounded.
Ukrainian troops have successfully broken through Russian defenses in another section of the border in the Kursk region, penetrating several kilometers into Russian territory.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Khorne UAV unit. At the same time, as Forbes analyst David Axe writes, this unexpected invasion was much more successful than initial data suggested.
It was initially assumed that, although the Ukrainian Armed Forces broke through the Russian border defenses, they encountered tougher Russian resistance a short distance from the breakthrough. The Kremlin said that its troops repelled the Ukrainian attack “with the support of army aviation and artillery fire.”
The Khorne UAV unit, which supported the breakthrough operation, rejected the Kremlin's statement and criticized the media that covered the breakthrough on Thursday. The reporters who quoted the Kremlin statement are “hysterical women who lack information or paid pro-Russian propagandists,” the group said.
As evidence of a successful breakthrough, the group posted a long video showing a Ukrainian armored column passing through the breach and then heading toward the city of Veseloye, which is in the rear of the Russian armed forces.
As the Forbes analyst notes, it appears that the Ukrainian armed forces group has penetrated as far as the southern outskirts of Veseloye.
“They entered a new place, kilometers into Russia… A group of Russian conscripts numbering several thousand people is at risk of being surrounded,” Khorne said.
It is not yet known how this operation will change the dynamics of the fighting. As Forbes notes, in the best-case scenario for Ukraine, a new cross-border attack could distract Russian troops from a counteroffensive further east. In the worst case scenario for Ukraine, the Kremlin's statement will prove accurate, and the invasion of Veseloye, although initially successful, has already ended with the retreat of Ukrainian troops.
