Denmark Strengthens Army And Buys New F-35 Fighter Jets

The country will spend $8.5 billion to strengthen its defense infrastructure.

Denmark is significantly strengthening its defense capabilities by investing billions of dollars in Arctic direction and weapons upgrades. The new measures reflect the global struggle for influence in the Arctic and preparations for potential crises.

It was reported by Bloomberg.

Denmark will spend $8.5 billion to strengthen its defense infrastructure. The plan includes the purchase of 16 F-35 fighter jets, two Arctic patrol ships, a maritime patrol aircraft, new drones and a submarine cable in the North Atlantic. A Joint Arctic Command headquarters in Nuuk will also be built and a separate military unit will be established in Greenland.

Presence in Greenland as a priority

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said a stronger presence is needed to ensure sovereignty, exercises and effective surveillance. He said the situation in the northern part of the Kingdom, especially in Greenland, has become more complex in recent years.

Geopolitical competition for the Arctic

The measures come amid increased interest in the Arctic, where Russia is building up its military presence and US President Donald Trump is seeking to control Greenland. Melting ice is opening up new shipping routes and access to minerals, turning the region into a center of global competition. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has called on the EU to strengthen cooperation to protect digital infrastructure.

Strengthening Denmark's combat capabilities

$4.5 billion has been allocated for the purchase of new Lockheed Martin fighter jets. The total F-35 fleet will reach 43 units, which significantly increases Denmark's combat power and contribution to NATO, the Chief of General Staff said.

Aid to Ukraine

Denmark leads among European countries in aid to Ukraine, behind only Germany and Britain. Compared to France, which has provided €7.56 billion, Denmark, with a smaller economy, has provided €10.1 billion, showing significant support.
