Israel And Hezbollah Have Agreed To A Ceasefire

The ceasefire began today.

Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to suspend hostilities starting Friday. The ceasefire in Lebanon is part of a preliminary peace agreement—a memorandum of understanding—signed this week by the United States and Iran.

The ceasefire began at 4:00 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. GMT). An hour later, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces confirmed the ceasefire.

“We have a ceasefire. The IDF is ready to resume fighting if ordered to do so,” reads a statement by Brigadier General Effi Defren.

A high-ranking U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, was the first to report on the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah to BBC and Reuters by a high-ranking U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“According to our information, following today’s exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, a ceasefire is now in effect,” the official said.

An anonymous diplomat from one of the Gulf states told AFP that the ceasefire agreement was reached through the mediation of Qatar, the U.S., and Iran.

The first clause of the agreement between the U.S. and Iran calls for an “immediate and permanent” cessation of hostilities on all fronts and specifically states that this applies to Lebanon as well.

In addition, the parties commit to upholding Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

At the same time, representatives of the U.S. administration stated that, although Lebanon is included in the agreement, it does not require the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese territory and reserves Israel’s right to self-defense.

Israel itself has stated that the memorandum signed by the U.S. and Iran does not apply to it, but that it is prepared to abide by its separate ceasefire agreement with the Lebanese government.

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yehiel Leiter wrote on Thursday on social media platform X: “Israel remains committed to the ceasefire agreement reached with Lebanon and the U.S. As long as Hezbollah does not violate the agreement, the ceasefire will remain in effect.”
