The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to American scientists from California John Clark, Michael Devore, John Martinis. Their experiments on a chip demonstrated quantum physics in action. The names of the laureates were announced in Stockholm on Tuesday, October 7.

One of the key questions in physics is what is the maximum size of a system in which quantum mechanical effects can be observed. This year's Nobel Prize winners conducted experiments with an electrical circuit in which they demonstrated both quantum tunneling and quantization of energy levels - in a system large enough to hold in your hand.

"Quantum mechanics allows a particle to pass through a barrier, a phenomenon called tunneling. However, when large numbers of particles are involved, quantum effects tend to become negligible. The laureates' experiments showed that quantum mechanical properties can also manifest themselves at the macroscopic level," the committee explained.

Transistors in computer microchips are an example of the familiar quantum technology that surrounds us. And this year's Nobel Prize in Physics, according to the committee, paves the way for the next generation of quantum technologies - quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors.
