The Trump administration is uniting around the idea.
Palestinians shouldn't have to be tied to the land where they now live to have a better life. The Trump administration is uniting around the president's idea to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
This was stated by the US special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Whitkoff, The Times of Israel reported.
According to him, ‘Peace in the region means a better life for the Palestinians. A better life is not necessarily about the physical space you are in today.’
‘A better life is better opportunities, better financial conditions, better aspirations for you and your family. It's not going to happen if you put up a tent in the Gaza Strip and you're surrounded by 30,000 rounds of ammunition that could explode at any moment. The president is saying, ‘Let's make these people's lives better. Let's give them more hope. Let them make that choice.’ And I think he's right,’ Whitkoff said.
Asked what message Trump is trying to send to the Middle East saying he wants the U.S. to ‘own’ Gaza, the ambassador said, ‘He (Trump. - ed.) is telling the Middle East that the way things have been done for the last 50 years has been wrong and he's going to change that. He's telling the Middle East that he wants to be transparent with the Palestinian people.’
According to Whitkoff, ‘Gaza is uninhabitable today and will probably be uninhabitable for at least the next 10 to 15 years.’
The ambassador also said he will meet with Qatar's prime minister on Thursday, 6 February, to discuss ongoing hostage negotiations.
US President Donald Trump held a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on 4 February.
Following the talks, the White House chief said the Palestinians have no other option but to relocate from the war-torn enclave. Egypt and Jordan should temporarily accept the refugees.
