Ukrainian Forces Carry Out Successful Attack Near Kursk: Occupiers Complain About Weather And Lie

A further offensive could threaten the rear groups of the Russian army.

In the course of 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces advanced in the Kursk region. The Russian Federation advanced five kilometers in depth. This was stated in a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on February 6.

Geolocation footage confirms that Ukrainian forces advance southwest from Makhnovka, north and east from Cherkasskaya Konopelka along the 38K-028 Sudzha-Oboyan highway. The Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to establish control over the Kolmakov farmstead and Fanaseyevka.

According to estimates by Russian war correspondents, the Ukrainian Armed Forces deployed 30-50 armored vehicles. Bloggers reported that one group successfully attacked from Makhnovka in the direction of the aforementioned settlements, and the other — from the Dmitryukov farmstead in the direction of Russkaya Konopelka. The second group's attack was allegedly repelled.

One of the Z-bloggers claimed that Ukrainian forces had captured Cherkasskaya Konopelka, while the other two Russians denied this claim. Also, enemy sources claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had broken through to the village of Ulanok or taken it under control, but their own colleagues also began to refute this information.

It was reported that there was unconfirmed information about an attack in the Kruglenkoye area, but analysts did not find any other data on this.

Enemy soldiers complained that the Ukrainian Armed Forces chose an unfortunate time for the attack, when the weather was not in Russia's favor. They noted that bad weather conditions made drone operations in this area southeast of Sudzha difficult. Some Russians expressed concern that a further advance by troops could threaten rear groups in the Guevo area, as well as complicate the Russian Armed Forces' ability to block land lines of communication within the Ukrainian offensive.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the elite Airborne Forces and Marines that defended the Kursk region on February 5. He stressed that the Ukrainian invasion on August 6, 2024, had reduced the number of Russian troops in the combined arms army in the region.

“Putin’s statement underscores the fact that the Ukrainian invasion has entrenched elements of these relatively elite formations in the Kursk region for the past six months, depriving Russia of the opportunity to redeploy these forces to higher-priority sections of the front line in the Donetsk region,” analysts noted.

A Russian poll, however, showed that support for the war in Russia remains high. Researchers interviewed 1,600 people from January 28 to February 2. Sixty-seven percent of respondents support the war unleashed in Ukraine, and 65% believe that this war is “going well” for the Russian Federation.

Representative of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center Mikhail Mamonov said that society demands a quick and favorable end to the war, supporting actions to achieve these goals. At the same time, Russians are outraged by the failures of the Russian Armed Forces, including the successful advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces deep into the Kursk region.

“These results come amid rising casualties, disputes among Russian commanders, and enormous economic pressure on the Russian economy during the war. Successful renewed Ukrainian counterattacks in the Kursk region could also negatively impact the Russian public’s view of the war in the coming weeks,” the ISW added.
