Europe is ready to send troops, and Washington is considering air support.
US and NATO military planners have started to develop possible scenarios of security guarantees for Ukraine after the war is over. This was reported by Reuters, citing US officials.
The impetus was US President Donald Trump's promise to help Kiev as part of a future peace deal with Russia. One option would see European troops stationed in Ukraine under national flags but under U.S. command. At the same time, no U.S. troops would be sent to Ukraine.
This was also emphasized by Trump in an interview with Fox News:
"When it comes to security, (the Europeans) are willing to send people on the ground, we're willing to help them with a variety of things, especially probably air, because nobody has what we have."
The sources said the US could provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems or even enforce a no-fly zone with its fighter jets.
In the meantime, NATO military leaders will hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss next steps on Ukraine and the results of Trump's recent talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Kiev and its allies fear that Washington may try to force an agreement on Moscow's terms. At the same time, Europe says security guarantees must be strong enough to deter further Kremlin aggression.
