This can be accomplished by more than just an act of Congress.
The Trump administration is working on plans to rename the Pentagon to the Department of War.
The The Wall Street Journal reports this.
According to an official, restoring the canceled name could be accomplished by an act of Congress. However, the White House is considering other options for making the change.
Just recently, U.S. President Donald Trump formally raised the issue, saying he believes the United States will have to revert to its former name.
A former official said the Pentagon began drafting legislative proposals for the change in the first weeks of Trump's second term.
One idea was to seek authority from Congress to restore the former title in case of a national emergency, and to revive the position of defense secretary for the department's top civilian.
Trump hinted at the Department of War
Remember, this week Trump said that the U.S. Department of Defense could revert to its original name, the Department of War.
"When we won World War I, World War II, it (the Pentagon - ed.) was called the Department of War. And to me that's really what it is," Trump said.
It should be noted that before 1947, the United States had a Department of War. It was created back in 1789 and was responsible for managing the U.S. Army and all land operations.
After World War II in 1947, Congress passed the National Security Act. As a result, the Department of War was abolished and replaced by the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force.
To unify all branches of the military (Army, Navy, and Air Force), the U.S. Department of Defense was established and officially became operational in 1949.
