Ukraine Is Changing The Rules Of War With Robots And Drones

Business Insider reported on the Ukrainian Armed Forces' new tactics.

The 3rd Army Corps, under the command of Andriy Biletsky deployed ground robots from heavy drones during Operation “Vivaldi”. Such fully robotic attacks are becoming a new reality of combat operations, writes Business Insider.

According to the publication, the drones delivered robots carrying explosives approximately 10 km behind Russian positions. This allowed for an attack from an unexpected direction, avoiding dangerous movement across the front line.

The commander of the NC13 unit of the 3rd Assault Brigade Nikolai Zinkevich, call sign Makar, told reporters that the tactic was named “Griffon” in honor of a soldier who went missing near Andriivka.

In late September, Biletsky stated that his units were the first in the world to deploy ground robots from drones in combat conditions.

Business Insider notes that conventional airborne assaults are limited due to dense air defenses. However, the combination of drones and ground robots allows operations behind enemy lines without the need for paratroopers, helicopters, or transport aircraft.

The Alter Ego unit of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade also employed similar technology. According to Brave1, its “Desantnik” robot went from concept to combat deployment in 10 days.

Zinkevich also noted that manufacturers are developing drones capable of transporting ground systems, scaling up a solution that has already proven its effectiveness on the front lines.
