A project to build a TNT manufacturing plant in Noormarkku, Finland, has received €30 million in funding from the EU’s defense industry program. This was reported by the broadcasting company Yle, citing the Finnish Ministry of Defense.

The funds will be used to establish a facility that will increase the production of critically important explosives on a national scale. The new production facility, as explained by the ministry, is intended to meet the needs of Finland and NATO, as well as to provide long-term support to Ukraine.

The project had previously received international funding: the U.S. allocated €18.3 million to it. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Forcit plant in Noormarkku, near Pori, took place in September.

“We have already secured nearly €50 million in international funding for the Finnish TNT production plant. The U.S. was the first to get involved, and now we have received confirmation from the EU as well,” said Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen.

He also expressed satisfaction that the Finnish project won the EU-wide competition and received high-level financial support.

The plant is expected to begin producing TNT sometime in 2028. According to Forcit, the company implementing the project, the total investment exceeds €200 million.

“The new production facility will strengthen Europe’s self-sufficiency and the availability of this strategically important material,” said Forcit Group CEO Joakim Westerlund.

According to him, the project will also create new industrial capacity in Finland and support its role as a reliable partner in the defense industry.
