The past few days have revealed something important.
U.S. President Donald Trump “has been caught in a downward spiral of betrayal of Ukraine since last week,” helping Russia win the war. This is stated in an editorial by The Kyiv Independent, which comments on the American leader’s latest moves.
According to the columnists, the past few days have revealed something even worse: Trump isn’t just leaving Ukraine without support; he is “actively helping Russia win the war.”
“Many media outlets and commentators are too cautious in how they phrase their thoughts, claiming that Trump is ‘putting pressure on Ukraine’ or exerting pressure on it. We all need to act responsibly and call a spade a spade, no matter how unpleasant it may sound: Trump isn’t trying to strike a deal—he’s trying to ‘end the war’ simply by helping Russia win,” the article states.
Journalists believe it all began after the White House announced a deal with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel fuel to the U.S. market.
This agreement will not lead to lower fuel prices. Instead, it sends a signal that deals with Russia are acceptable, despite its brutal war against Ukraine.
This was followed by Trump’s unexpected announcement of an “energy truce,” about which Ukrainian authorities knew nothing. When Russia ignored this initiative and continued to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Trump remained silent on the matter.
The situation only worsened thereafter: Russia struck Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles over the course of two nights, while Kyiv received no information from the U.S. side warning of the Russian launches.
“Although there is no confirmation yet, there is a high probability that the U.S. restricted the sharing of certain intelligence data. If this is true, it would mean the deaths of even more Ukrainians. The lack of warning means there is no time to reach shelter. At least three people were killed in a similar attack in Kyiv last night—civilians in their homes,” the article states.
In addition, the publication notes that on October 14, it was reported that restrictions on Ukraine’s use of the Starlink system.
“This betrayal came after one of the deadliest weeks for Ukraine’s civilian population. Last week, Russia killed more than 150 civilians in Ukraine. In just one strike—on a bus stop in Kramatorsk—33 people were killed. In another Russian attack, in Pryluky, three one-year-old children were among the dead,” the authors of the article write.
The journalists also point out that Trump has repeatedly condemned Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries in Russia, while his last condemnation of Russian strikes against Ukraine’s civilian population was in 2025.
“Although Trump has repeatedly demonstrated his contempt for Ukraine (you surely remember the incident in the Oval Office), his latest act of cynicism must shock even his most ardent supporters,” the article states. At the same time, the authors are convinced that the U.S. president’s aid to Russia will not force Ukrainians to stop fighting, but it is prolonging the war.
