The fight for the truth will continue even after the war.

Ukrainian artists, filmmakers, and journalists will have to continue fighting for the truth about the Russian war even after hostilities have ceased. This was stated by Oscar-winning director of the film “20 Days in Mariupol,” Mstislav Chernov, writes CEPA (translation by Charter97.org).

In his address, recorded on the front lines in Ukraine, Chernov emphasized that art cannot stop missiles and bullets, but it can preserve evidence of what is happening and resist attempts to rewrite history.

“When the war ends—and sooner or later every war ends—another battle will begin: for truth and justice,” the director stated.

Russia is waging a large-scale propaganda campaign, attempting to shift the blame for the invasion onto Ukraine and the West. Chernov warned that the struggle over the interpretation of events will only intensify.

“Everyone will try to rewrite history in accordance with their own beliefs and interests,” he noted, calling on cultural figures to preserve authentic evidence of the war.
Ukrainian artist Olya Rondiak, who has been working in her studio in Kyiv since the start of the full-scale invasion, spoke about her grandmother. She secretly embroidered religious icons in a Soviet labor camp, using whatever materials were at hand to preserve her Ukrainian identity.
“Art protects what war seeks to destroy; it documents what others want to consign to oblivion,” — said Rondiak.

According to her, Ukrainian artists continue to tell the world about their experiences, proving that creativity can be a form of resistance and a way to preserve memory for future generations.
