Against the backdrop of increasingly frequent attacks on ships in the Black Sea.
Bulgaria has asked NATO to provide combat aircraft, missile systems, and drone-countermeasure systems amid increasingly frequent attacks on ships in the Black Sea.
According to Nova, reported Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov.
The Bulgarian official warned that the situation in the Black Sea region is becoming increasingly tense. According to him, the intensity of the attacks is increasing, and recent incidents near the territories of allied countries underscore the need for accelerated modernization of the Bulgarian army.
“We have sent letters and appeals to the NATO Secretary General and the Supreme Allied Commander, calling for a strengthening of our capabilities, which also implies the deployment of additional forces on our territory. We are awaiting their decision. At this stage, it has not yet been confirmed exactly what kind of support we will receive or how it will be provided,” Stoyanov noted.
In response to a question about what specific assistance Bulgaria had requested, he clarified that the request covers a wide range of military capabilities.
“We have requested both aircraft and missile systems, counter-drone systems, and patrol aircraft—in other words, the full range of options. Of course, our allies have limited capabilities. Romania also needs additional capabilities, as do the Baltic states,” Stoyanov said.
This week, drones attacked two ships that caught fire off Romania’s Black Sea coast. On Friday, Romania continued the search for seven sailors missing as a result of the attack.
