Macron Addressed The Nation Amid Mass Protests In France
Emmanuel Macron

The French president said that the protesters' voices will be heard.

French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the country's largest protests, stated that the protesters' voices must be heard. He made this statement in a video address to the nation, according to RBC.

“Their voices must be heard, without bias and without downplaying the difficulties. The government has already begun this work,” the French leader stated.

He noted that the authorities must listen to angry citizens and address the root causes of the crisis, while upholding the rule of law. “We must not confuse legitimate demands with violence, and we must not allow violence to prevent these demands from being heard,” he said.

Macron stated that on Saturday, extremists from “far-left groups,” joined by criminals, unleashed “unrestrained violence” in French cities. He noted that during the protests, businesses were looted and public buildings, stores, and city halls were attacked.

“Several hundred police officers and gendarmes were injured. Watching these images, we all asked ourselves: ‘What are they thinking? How can the French treat France this way? Why burn down the city hall in Limoges, the tourist office in Lyon, storm the city hall in Marseille, or attack the prefect’s residence in Bordeaux? How can they go this far? Nothing justifies this, nothing explains this, nothing excuses this. Tonight, we all feel anger and shame,” he said.

The French leader also emphasized that seeing the streets in such a state is “unbearable.”

In addition, Macron expressed his support for shop owners who have suffered the consequences of the protests and violence. “Some defended their own stores and storefronts against criminals. I want to assure them that they will not be left alone to face these difficulties,” he said.

According to Macron, under the current circumstances, prefects will make decisions together with mayors to protect cities, public buildings, and businesses. In particular, they may ban certain gatherings.

The French president also called on all political parties, organizations, and labor unions to condemn any violence and urge citizens to remain calm. “Everyone must take responsibility. The country needs order and calm, not escalation,” he said.
