The President of Ukraine is pushing for the lifting of restrictions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to a bipartisan group of U.S. senators with a request to pressure the administration of Donald Trump to lift restrictions on intelligence sharing and arms deliveries. This was reported by Axios.
According to the publication, which obtained a transcript, during an online meeting with a group of senators led by Republican Tom Tillis and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, Zelenskyy discussed Ukraine’s challenges. In particular, the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems are still operating with limitations, despite the White House’s statements to the contrary.
“We still haven’t received any explanation on this matter. Unfortunately, we’re only hearing all sorts of strange stories,” Zelenskyy told the senators, adding that this makes it difficult to shoot down Russian attack drones.
He noted that last week, Ukraine did not receive warnings from the U.S. about Russian ballistic strikes on three occasions, including Sunday. In his view, this may indicate a restriction on intelligence sharing.
“We haven’t received a single clear explanation from Washington as to why this is happening,” he added.
In addition, Zelenskyy stated that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset is not authorizing the delivery of interceptors for the Patriot system and AIM-9X missiles for the NASAMS air defense system, even though NATO countries have already paid for them.
“We have almost no Patriot interceptors left from our American partners. All of this suggests that some kind of political decision was likely made to slow down support for Ukraine. We want to understand what is happening, why it is happening, and where all of this is leading,” he said.
After the meeting, Tillis stated that Congress remains committed to supporting Ukraine and its European allies in countering Russia’s brutal aggression and ensuring lasting peace.
“Bipartisan support for Ukraine has been clear and unequivocal, and we will demonstrate that through our continued actions. Appeasement won’t work with Putin—a thug who understands only force and coercion,” said Blumenthal.
Zelenskyy’s Proposal
Zelenskyy told the senators that on Sunday, during a conversation with U.S. representatives Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner, he had proposed suspending Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries for 30 days. In return, the U.S. would have to provide Ukraine with Patriot interceptors so that it could defend itself against Russian ballistic missiles during that period. According to the president, the American side showed no willingness to consider this proposal.
Zelenskyy also said that he will be in Oslo next week and may meet with Whitcoff and Kushner there. After that, the publication reports, citing sources, the U.S. special envoys may travel to Moscow for a meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
