The German chancellor called on Europeans to remain vigilant.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned Europeans against complacency. According to him, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin seeks not only to defeat Ukraine but also to undermine democracy in Europe. This was reported by Bloomberg.
“What worries me most is the underestimated influence of Russia on our societies. Russia is on a path to destabilizing the entire political order on our European continent,” Merz said.
He added that many people, including those in Germany, do not take the threat seriously enough.
“They don’t understand what Russia’s real goal is. It’s not just about territorial gains in Ukraine. They fear democracy. They fear open societies. They fear the success of European integration,” the chancellor explained.
Merz also noted that Germany, together with other European and non-American allies, has been funding Ukraine without receiving assistance from the U.S. to cover defense costs or deploy military equipment.
“This is truly a huge burden on our budgets; it is a truly important cause for the European Union. But we are doing this and will try to continue until this terrible war ends,” he emphasized.
According to Merz, at every meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, he tries to convince him that a stable Europe, the European continent, and the European Union as a global partner are in Trump’s own best interests.
In conclusion, the chancellor added that European governments have recognized the seriousness of the situation amid tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine, as well as Washington’s deal with Moscow on diesel fuel, which is why countries are reforming their defense systems to become more independent.
“We hear a warning signal. And we are trying to put ourselves in a position that will allow us to be strong enough to compete and defend ourselves independently within NATO,” the German chancellor concluded.
