Italian authorities are responding to the riots.
The Italian government will deploy 500 military personnel to Milan following the riots on October 17–18. Protesters demonstrating against the rising cost of living in the country clashed with police and looted stores, including designer clothing boutiques, according to The Guardian.
The deployment of military personnel is expected to be part of a security package that the cabinet will approve on Tuesday. Meanwhile, many business owners in Milan are keeping their stores closed, fearing a new escalation. Sports retailers Decathlon and Arc’teryx, as well as mobile carrier Vodafone, have reportedly been affected by the unrest. Other brands, including Levi’s and Under Armour, have boarded up their storefronts with cardboard and wooden panels. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini assured the public that the authorities have moved “from words to action.”
Other high-ranking politicians, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have also condemned the riots in Italian cities. Among the possible measures to combat the unrest, the government is considering extending the duration of preventive detention, including for minors.
Earlier, Italian police reported the arrest of 271 people during Sunday’s riots in Milan.
