Putin cannot be trusted.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican and key ally of Donald Trump, stated that he had warned the White House about the “unpredictable consequences” that could result from lifting sanctions against Russia. This was reported by The Hill.

According to him, Putin cannot be trusted.

“That’s why yesterday I actually spoke with several of my colleagues who expressed concern about this issue. They serve on relevant committees, such as the Intelligence and Foreign Affairs Committees, and I didn’t speak with the president yesterday because we’re both constantly traveling and have different schedules. But I told the White House team that we need to discuss this issue and, in my view, carefully weigh the unpredictable consequences that might result from it,” Johnson emphasized.

He believes that “the president views this the same way he views everything else.”

“Listen, he has two main goals, as you know, Larry. Every day, he strives to ensure America’s security and lower the cost of living for every American. He constantly thinks outside the box, proposes creative ideas, and analyzes them carefully. That’s why I believe the right decision will ultimately be made here,” — the politician said in a comment to Fox News host Larry Kudlow.

At the same time, several Republican lawmakers criticized Trump’s move.

“What part of the bill, which the Senate passed 86–11, do the president and his advisers not understand? It is unacceptable for this administration to capitulate to a Russian dictator who has illegally invaded Ukraine and is killing innocent civilians every day,” — wrote Senator Tom Tillis (a Republican from North Carolina) on social media platform X.

Representative Don Bacon (a Republican from Nebraska) wrote on X that the president “is continuing the war, not ending it.”

Trump, for his part, defended the move on Truth Social, writing that he is in the process of negotiating a peace agreement in the war between Russia and Ukraine and does not want to do anything that would recklessly push Russia away from the negotiating table.
