A Massive Drug Lab Has Been Discovered In Lithuania

Amphetamine and methamphetamine were synthesized there on an industrial scale.

On October 21, Lithuanian law enforcement reported that a massive drug laboratory had been discovered. The laboratory was producing hundreds of kilograms of amphetamine and methamphetamine, according to delfi.lt.

At a press conference, Saulius Briginas, deputy head of the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, said that this is the largest lab both in Lithuania and, most likely, in all of the Baltic states.

“The size of this lab, the amount of equipment, and its production capacity are unprecedented. Hundreds of kilograms of amphetamine and methamphetamine were produced in this lab—on an industrial scale, so to speak,” said Briginas.
The lab was located in the Vilnius district and may have been in operation for about two years. “This doesn’t mean that drugs were produced there every day. The production process was carried out in stages,” Briginas noted.

During the operation, 500 kg of methamphetamine and 300 kg of amphetamine were discovered, as well as 4.5 kg of synthetic cathinones and 300 liters of 1-phenyl-2-propanone—a substance necessary for drug production.

“The drugs produced in this lab could have been shipped to other countries, including the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Belgium,” Briginas said. During searches of the suspects’ premises, more than 200,000 euros in cash were found.

Four individuals have been charged; two of them are in custody. The investigation into the possession of a very large quantity of narcotics with the intent to distribute is ongoing.
“We believe that one of the organizers is a Dutch citizen of Turkish origin. The other suspects are Lithuanian nationals,” said Prosecutor Rolandas Imbrasas. One of the detainees had a prior conviction for the illegal possession of narcotics and psychotropic substances; the others had no prior convictions.

The investigation revealed that the organized group had established an international supply network for substances used in drug production and for the drugs themselves.

Equipment and chemicals were purchased through suppliers in China, India, and various European countries. Some of the substances were purchased in Lithuania from specialized companies.
The investigation revealed that a very large quantity of chemicals was used in the production process. The laboratory contained 380 hydrogen cylinders from China. Hydrogen is used in the production of synthetic drugs.

In addition, it is known that some of the substances were purchased on an industrial scale. For example, they purchased a full metric ton of sulfuric acid at once.
