Whitcoff's remarks caused quite a stir in U.S. political circles.
U.S. Presidential Special Representative Steven Whitcoff called Russian leader Vladimir Putin a “humanitarian” and thanked him for the release of an American Steven Hubbard who had been convicted in Russia of “mercenary activities.” This characterization by the Kremlin leader sparked debate within the American establishment. Among those who commented on Whitcoff’s remarks was U.S. President Donald Trump.
“You very often say that my president, President Trump, is a humanitarian. I would like to say that you are the same kind of person who graciously considered this matter (regarding Hubbard’s release—Ed.). I thank you for that,” Stephen Whitcoff said during a meeting with Vladimir Putin on October 21 in St. Petersburg.
Later that same day, the U.S. president was asked if he could describe Putin using the same word.
“Well, I think it’s fair to say that this was necessary precisely for that purpose—to free a man who thought he would spend the rest of his life in prison. But I wouldn’t say anything one way or the other,” said Donald Trump.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance also spoke out in support of Whitcoff.
“I agree that Steve Whitcoff said something nice about the man who just freed an American hostage. Regardless of whether you agree with that assessment or not, Steve Whitcoff is a diplomat. His job is to go there and get results. I’m far less concerned about what Steve said than about the fact that he brought an American hostage home to his family. We should celebrate that, rather than complain about what he said to achieve it,” said J.D. Vance.
Meanwhile, some Republicans criticized Whitcoff for describing the Russian president in such terms, according to a report (“Zerkalo” asked Trump whether he considers Putin a “humanist”).
“What the hell, Steve? Look up the definition of ‘humanist.’ What a shameful and outrageous statement. You should go back to Ukraine and ask the families of the children Putin kidnapped and killed if they agree that your friend Putin is a ‘humanist’ — wrote North Carolina Republican Senator Tom Tillis on X.
“Yet another disgrace,” wrote Republican Don Bacon from Nebraska on X, attaching a video of Whitcoff’s comments to his post.
“No. Putin is a cold-blooded killer,” wrote Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas on X.
“Vladimir Putin is not our friend, and he is certainly not a humanitarian,” wrote Republican Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa on X. “His relentless attacks on innocent civilians in Ukraine demonstrate his utter disregard for human life. Appeasement will not end this war. Pressure will.”
“We shouldn’t praise the Russians for releasing a man who shouldn’t have been in prison in the first place,” noted former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor, who served under the Bush and Obama administrations, in a comment to VBS News. “And calling Putin a humanist is simply disgusting.”
