A Republican Party representative expressed support for the president of Ukraine.
On October 21, Republican Party representative Mitt Romney took to the social media platform X to comment on a potential agreement—one that, given Russia’s interests, is being proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy— and expressed support for his refusal to accept peace at any cost.
He drew an analogy with well-known historical figures who, in their time, also refused to sign agreements and were proven right, in particular with former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, the first American president George Washington.
“Churchill could have shortened World War II by several years if he had simply ‘reached an agreement’ with [Nazi Germany’s Führer Adolf] Hitler. George Washington could have negotiated an end to the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company,” Romney noted.
Churchill could have shortened World War II by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have negotiated a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

Romney is a former U.S. Senator from Utah who was the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2012. In March 2018, The New Yorker reported that Moscow was not satisfied with Romney as U.S. Secretary of State because he had called Russia the United States’ main enemy, and that it was Russia that had blocked his appointment in 2016. Romney had previously referred to Russia as a “gas station.” “Russia is, if you will, a gas station that only pretends to be a country, as [the late Senator] John McCain used to say. “They’re facing major difficulties right now; they’re in a period of decline and are lashing out at those around them,” the politician said on CNN in December 2020.
