Japanese author Ryu (Ryunosuke) Murakami has died, according to his publisher Gentosha. He was 74 years old.
The cause of death was not disclosed. The writer passed away at his home on October 17. His funeral was held with only close family members in attendance.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the untimely passing of Ryu Murakami, who consistently created innovative works aimed at the younger generation,” reads the obituary published by the publishing house.
Ryu Murakami was a Japanese writer, screenwriter, and film director. Unlike his famous namesake Haruki Murakami, Ryu focused on a distinctly Japanese reality, exploring the “underside” of society.
Ryu Murakami’s best-known works are the novels *Children of the Locker Room* (1980), *Miso Soup* (1997), and *All the Shades of Blue* (1976).
