Peru Is Changing The System For Visiting The Famous Machu Picchu

Peru Is Changing The System For Visiting The Famous Machu Picchu

What Tourists Should Keep in Mind.

Machu Picchu—one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”—is on the list of places many travelers dream of visiting. This is reported by euronews.

Peru’s Ministry of Culture has eliminated the advance ticket reservation system for this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Now, you have only 15 minutes to complete your purchase on the official website—Tu Boleto. If payment is not made within that time, the reservation is canceled, and the ticket is made available for sale again.

Since tickets are now personalized, to enter the Machu Picchu site, the information on your ID must exactly match the information on the ticket.

As explained by the Ministry of Culture, this change was implemented so that “the information about seat availability on the platform matches the tickets that are actually available for purchase.”

It is noted that the new ticketing system has been launched in test mode: based on the results, the 15-minute time limit for completing a purchase may be revised (increased or decreased).

Strict visitor limits for the Machu Picchu citadel remain in effect: up to 5,600 people per day during high season and up to 4,500 during low season. For the Inca Trail, the limit is set at 750 visitors per day.

In addition, 1,000 tickets go on sale daily at the DDC-Cusco ticket office in Machu Picchu Pueblo—these tickets can be used the day after purchase.

How to Get to Machu Picchu

Travelers from Europe must first fly to Peru’s capital, Lima, and from there take a domestic flight to Cusco.

From Cusco, you can take a train or bus to Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu Pueblo), from where a hiking trail or bus route leads to the citadel itself. Direct flights to Lima are available from Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Amsterdam.
