A woman from Minsk spent two days explaining herself to strangers, and then lost $6,000.
For two days, scammers forced a 19-year-old woman from Minsk to send photos every hour so they could monitor her whereabouts and activities. The young woman believed she was communicating with KGB agents and ultimately handed over her family’s entire savings—about $6,000—to the scammers, according to the Minsk City Executive Committee’s Main Directorate of Internal Affairs.
It all started with a phone call. An unknown caller identified himself as a KGB officer and told the Minsk college student that her personal data had fallen into the hands of criminals. To prove her innocence, the young woman was allegedly required to cooperate with the security services.
For two days, the scammers monitored her every move. They demanded that the Minsk resident send photos every hour, along with a report on her location and activities. In addition, the scammers video-chatted with her and repeated their instructions.
At one point, the scammers called the young woman and spent about an hour explaining the functions of the National Bank and why it is necessary to declare money.
As a result, the woman from Minsk believed that her family’s savings needed to be handed over for verification. She gathered about $6,000 and gave it to the scammers’ courier. She was assured that the money would be checked and returned within an hour. However, after receiving the cash, the scammers stopped responding.
Realizing she had been deceived, the Minsk woman reported the incident to the police. An investigation into the incident is underway.
