Scientists Have Identified The Smartest Dog Breed

The animals underwent three tests.

Using three tests, researchers determined which dog breed has the highest level of intelligence.

Border Collies most often top lists of the smartest dogs, followed by Poodles, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers, according to "Cursor".

However, a study of dogs’ cognitive abilities conducted by scientists at the University of Helsinki yielded a different result: the Belgian Malinois demonstrated the highest scores.

This is a herding breed that resembles a German Shepherd in appearance but is lighter in weight and has more triangular ears.

The researchers assessed the dogs’ intelligence using three tests: they tested the dogs’ ability to navigate a V-shaped obstacle to reach food, understand various human gestures, and act in an unsolvable situation where access to food in a closed box was impossible. The last test also showed how quickly a dog turns to a human for help.

Based on the results of the three tests, the Belgian Malinois scored 35 out of a possible 39 points, achieving the highest score among the breeds studied. Border Collies scored 26 points and came in second place, while Hovawarts took third place with 25 points.

“The Belgian Malinois stood out in many cognitive tasks, performing very well in most tests. Border Collies also performed well in many tests,” emphasized the study’s author, Dr. Katrina Tiira.
